Headband Holder

I recently saw a cute handmade headband holder online that was just too irresistible! I have a lot of headbands and needed something like this to help organize my collection.

Here's my creation ~

The middle cylinder part of this is a Quaker Oats container. I spray painted it white so that the print wouldn't show through the fabric. I then lightly sprayed the outside of the container with Super 77 glue.  I also lightly sprayed the backside of the fabric, waited a few minutes and then wrapped the container in the fabric smoothing out any wrinkles and bubbles along the way.

For the top, I cut a round piece of white contact paper to cover the Quaker Oats writing on the top, attached a glass drawer pull in the middle for a decorative touch, and glued a piece of ribbon around the edge to embellish it.

I used a ceramic pillar candle holder for the bottom that I purchased at Target a while ago. I think you could find something similar at a thrift store and could spray paint it whatever color you needed. I think I got really lucky with mine because the pillar holder fit nice and snug in the bottom of the container without any glue necessary. I would have hot-glued this if it hadn't worked out so nicely.

The center of the headband holder can be used to store other hairbands, etc.

Jewelry Organizer

I found this project on Pinterest and knew immediately that it was exactly the kind of thing I needed to get my jewelry organized ~ finally!

My Jewelry Organizer

I went to my local Home Depot and found everything there. I played around with several different styles of wood trim trying to figure out what would work, what would look best, and what would go together the easiest. In the end, I think I found 3 pieces of wood trim that accomplished all of my goals.

Honestly, I haven't made anything like this before so I wasn't really sure if I was getting pieces that were going to be deep enough or would be wide enough. I was in the store for a while that day stacking wood, and restacking, and stepping back each time to try to envision what I was trying to make. I bet the folks at the Home Depot thought I might have been a little crazy stacking pieces of wood trim for an hour ~ then again ~ maybe they're used to that. I certainly felt a little out of place. I'm usually looking at light fixtures, plants, or paint when I'm in there.

I also purchased four packages of silver-plated upholstery nails at the Home Depot. I was originally looking for rubber coated hooks rather than the upholstery nails but couldn't find them. I think it actually looks more finished with these so now I'm glad I couldn't find what I thought I wanted originally. Each small package of upholstery nails contained 20 upholstery nails and in the end, I used every one of them ~ so yes, there are 80 nails, or tacks, on my jewelry organizer.

I measured and placed the tacks with a small hammer. The tacks at the far left are closer together, spaced a half-inch apart, for delicate necklaces. The tacks on the right are spaced about an inch apart for the larger, more-chunky, necklaces. The tacks across the bottom row are offset and centered between the tacks in the top row. At first glance, it might look like every one of the 80 nails, or tacks, have been used but there are some empty ones towards the left side.

In the end, the total cost for materials was $20.54 ~ and worth every penny if you ask me. I'm in love with my new jewelry organizer and don't think that it could have turned out any better!

Project Completed: Drexel Dresser ~ it's now a Buffet!

This is my follow up to my previous post for a dresser I wanted to use in the kids room. I had just found an old and very very very long {72 inches long!} Drexel dresser that I wanted to paint and put in the kids room.

Well, I changed my mind and decided it was just too long to use in the kids room BUT ~ it's the perfect length to use as a buffet in my dining room and I think it's gorgeous in black, of course.

I decided to change the drawer pulls to a brushed nickel but I'm not convinced that they are the right look for the dresser, uh, wait buffet. I think it would look lovely with a clear pressed glass vintage-looking drawer pull. Something like what I've used before on the china hutch I had painted a while ago so I might change them again depending on what I can find.

Anyhow, here it is... what do you think???

Jewelry Organizer Inspiration

I'm super excited to start this next project: a Jewelry Organizer!  I've needed something to hang all of my necklaces on for such a long time. Since we moved this past summer, I haven't unpacked my jewelry ~ It's still all in a moving box. I haven't even tried to unpack that box because I really don't have a good place to put them all. Before we moved, they were all over my bedroom and bathroom. This project is perfect for getting me organized! (and I think my hubby agrees)

I got the idea from another blog, With a Gateful Prayer and a Thankful Heart.  It's genius!

I bought the wood trim pieces the other day at the Home Depot and just showed it to Troy. I showed him the blog and together we got a plan going. I'll post a picture when it's all done.

Here's a picture of my inspiration and an example of what it should, hopefully, look like when it's finished. I just hope mine looks half this good when it's all done ~ fingers crossed!!
